New policies facilitate Vietnam’s automobile market

The reduction of vehicle import tax from ASEAN countries to 0% helped domestic production reach 114,600 in the first six months of 2018, up 15.5% from the same period in 2017.

As companies adapt to the new policies, imported car figures are expected to increase sharply in the second half of 2018.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade forecast that the total number of automobiles produced and assembled will reach 235,000 units by end of the year.

Vietnam works to support auto industry

Vietnam and Thailand have agreed in principle, a framework which will help open up the Vietnamese auto market to imports.

This initiative will help lower barriers for importers who can provide warranties and maintenance, and should increase demand in the domestic aftermarket parts sector.

The two countries also agreed to raise bilateral trade to US$20 billion (665 billion baht) in 2020, up from $16.64 billion in 2017.
