Recover and rebound: China’s comeback from COVID-19

China’s economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic continued in the third quarter. Trade figures indicated that the country’s economy expanded by 4.9% between July and September, compared with a year earlier, thanks to the extensively enforced measures such as early lockdowns and nationwide test-and-trace campaigns to bring the pandemic under control.

According to Chinese customs data, the country’s imports increased by 2.7% in June from a year earlier, reversing a 16.7% slump in May; while showing a 0.5% increase in June in terms of exports, contrary to the 3.3% decline in the month before. This reflects improving demand in both the domestic and the overseas market.

With the upward momentum gained by the recovery of the factory sector in China, the country’s industrial output showed a 6.9% increase in September following the 5.6% rise in August. GDP rose 2.7% from July to September, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The medical and personal hygiene sector is among the few sectors that bloomed during the pandemic, as consumer demand rose for PPE. China has been the world’s factory answering to the call. According to CCPIT’s figures, China exported 1 billion masks and protective clothing items to more than 200 countries and regions from March to September, accounting for the majority of the imports of the global market.

China’s open economy and its domestic consumption
On the other hand, as the Chinese economy and its domestic demand revitalises from the pandemic shockwaves, imports to China also jumped 13.2% year-on-year to an all-time high of USD 202.8 billion in September. This supply-driven structural rebound is leading the global market to the path to recovery.
