Achieving a truly sustainable textile industry will not come without a concerted effort on research and innovation, and collaboration between different players in the sector.

With this in mind, Intertextile is pleased to partner with The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA) to bring together four experts from four corners of the industry for the Threads of Innovation: Pathway to Next-Gen Materials panel discussion on Day 2 of the fair.

This panel discussion will delve deep into the research and application of green materials in the fashion industry. It will explore how innovative materials can enable a circular economy, and analyse the important impact of sustainable development on the future of the textile sector. Join HKRITA and other industry experts to explore the endless possibilities of green materials!

The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel

With a diverse background in the manufacturing industry, Mr. KK Chan has held key roles in various sectors, including polymer compounding, cosmetics, and banknote printing. He excels in overseeing operations, production activities, and allocating resources. He has successfully developed manufacturing processes for a range of products, such as heat insulating metal oxide, copper nano-particles, and PVB film for safety glass. Currently, he is actively engaged in R&D at HKRITA, where he is involved in projects related to blended textile upcycling and the application of bacterial cellulose materials.

Prof. Liangjun Xia received his doctoral degree from Deakin University in Australia and completed his postdoctoral program at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, China. Currently, he serves as a Professor at the State Key Laboratory of Textile New Materials and Advanced Processing Technologies in Wuhan Textile University, China. He also serves as the technical leader of Winner Medical Innovation Research Institute, a youth editorial board member of various academic journals and a youth committee member of the Textile Bioengineering and Informatics Society.

After 15 years behind multinational fashion and beauty brands, Natalie left behind her marketing job to start her sustainable sneaker brand, KIBO, with her husband Simon. With a family background of shoe-manufacturing of over 50 years, the couple wanted to do things differently; with a positive impact for the people and the planet. With a core offering of simple, minimalist sneakers made from innovative materials like upcycled agricultural waste & discarded plastics & leather wastes, they have also recently branched out to technical footwear, providing safety shoes for the service industry such as hotels and restaurants.

Mr Hongjun Ning is the Executive Vice President of UNIFI® and President of Unifi Textiles (Suzhou) Co. Ltd. (“UTSC”) (UNIFI’s subsidiary in China), roles he has held since 2020. Ning also serves as President of Unifi Asia Pacific (Hong Kong) Company, Limited (UNIFI’s subsidiary in Hong Kong). Ning leads the overall business of Unifi in Asia Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa comprehensively. With nearly 20 years of experience in the textile industry and a global footprint, Ning is a strong leader in global expansion, start-ups, and growth strategies with a global perspective.
